The Portugals, são portugueses, do Porto, e eles são Manuel Justo e Paulo Barreto.

Para quem os está agora a descobrir, acabam por se revelar como mais uma surpreendente novidade da música indie portuguesa.
Lançaram em 2008 o EP intitulado “Setubal”, de apenas quatro faixas, muito agradáveis de se ouvirem. O EP pode ser ouvido no “MySpace” da banda. Vale mesmo a pena!

Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir é, nesta música, a menina que nos faz sonhar com a sua voz delicada e susurrante, que chega até por vezes a roçar o infantil. O instrumental electrónico é muito minimalista e quase hipnótico.

Sunset Rubdown - Random Spirit Lover

Sunset Rubdown é uma banda de indie-rock originária de Montreal, Canadá. Spencer Krug, Camilla Wynn Ingr, Michael Doerksen, Jordan Robson-Cramer e Marc Nicol, formam os Sunset Rubdown.
Esta é uma banda claramente influenciada por uma outra, sua conterrânea, os Arcade Fire. As influências são por demais evidentes quando se ouve os dois álbuns de Sunset Rubdown. Até no detalhe de os integrantes da banda serem capazes de tocarem vários instrumentos alternadamente. Mas Sunset Rubdown tem muito mais por onde explorar. O facto do seu quase anonimato permite-lhes maior liberdade na busca de outras sonoridades e fazer algo de diferente, como seja “Random Spirit Lover”.
Músicas como “The mending of the gown”, “Up on your leopard, upon the end of your feral days”, “Winged/Wicked things” e “For the pier” são o testemunho de porque foi “Random Spirit Lover” um dos melhores de 2007.

Sigur Rós @ Campo Pequeno

Foi um Campo Pequeno bem composto e expectante que acolheu de forma eufórica o regresso dos Sigur Rós a Portugal.

Ao inicio da noite, os também islandeses For a Minor Reflection levaram à descoberta do seu post-rock instrumental, e com ele foram convencendo uma plateia, certa de que os irá seguir com mais atenção daqui para a frente.

Uma mão cheia de músicas que oscilavam entre melodias calmas e explosivas serviram para aumentar a expectativa de um público que impacientemente aguardava os momentos que se haviam de seguir.

Já passava para lá da meia hora desde que os For a Minor Reflection tinham abandonado o palco quando a música ambiente que então se havia mantido se silenciara. Num momento as luzes se apagaram, e num palco quase às escuras, mas colorido de luzes a pretexto, surgem os primeiros acordes da arrepiante “Svefn-g-englar”. A viagem mágica havia então começado, e sem darmos por ela, nela fomos até onde nos levassem. Fomos levados até à liberdade de “Gobbledigook”, passamos pela alegria de “Hoppipolla”, pela melancolia de “All alright”, pela doçura de “Ný batterí” e “Saeglópur”, pelo sempre enigmático Untitled, e numa roda-viva de sentimentos assim voamos através do tempo.

No fim, uns Sigur Rós eternamente agradecidos a um público completamente rendido e que efusivamente os aplaudia.

“Inní mér syngur vitleysingur” - Sigur Rós live @ Reykjavik

Para marcar o regresso dos Sigur Rós a Portugal, aqui fica um videoclipe da música “Inní mér syngur vitleysingur” gravado ao vivo em Reykjavik, num concerto que a banda ofereceu pela natureza no passado dia 28 de Junho. O concerto intitulado de Náttúra contou também com a presença de Bjork, e a intenção foi a de alertar e sensibilizar a população islandesa para a destruição da paisagem natural do país.

A banda islandesa volta ao nosso país no dia 11 de Novembro para apresentar o novo álbum “Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust”. O concerto terá lugar no Campo Pequeno em Lisboa.

Depois do excelente “Nice and nicely done” os Spinto Band estão de volta aos álbuns. “Moonwink” é o sexto álbum desta banda norte-americana.

The Spinto Band são Nick Krill (guitarra e vocais), Jon Eaton (guitarra), Joe Hobson (guitarra), Thomas Hughes (baixo), Sam Hughes (keyboard) e Jeff Hobson (bateria).

“Moonwink” é um bom álbum de indie-rock carregado de músicas alegres de inicio ao fim. Não é que dele faça parte alguma música candidata a melhor do ano, mas o álbum pode muito bem figurar em qualquer uma lista como um dos melhores dentro do seu género.
Não há momentos calmos. Desde que “Later on” começa, o ritmo vivo das músicas só tem o seu fim com o término de “The black flag”. É um álbum que requer mais que uma audição até que os ouvidos se habituem a ele – “Primeiro estranha-se. Depois entranha-se.”.
Destacam-se faixas como “Later on”, “Needlepoint”, “Pumpkins and paisley” e “Ain’t this the truth”. Sem duvida um álbum de audição obrigatória.

Balmorhea - Rivers Arms

Hoje trago algo um pouco diferente daquilo que é costume aqui deixar.

Apresento-vos Balmorhea, banda do Texas formada pelo duo Rob Lowe e Michael Muller, acompanhados por um quarteto de instrumentos de cordas (violino e cello).
Este ano lançaram o seu segundo álbum, “Rivers Arms”. Um álbum de música calma e relaxante à semelhança de uma rua deserta a preto e branco no silêncio. Aqui não há “barulho”, não há guitarras eléctricas nem distorções, não há um baixo nem uma bateria a marcar o ritmo. Há sim um piano e uma guitarra acústica, melodias de acordes dedilhados simples e naturais.

Mogwai - The Hawk is Howling

No filme “Gremlins” existiam umas personagens que serviram de inspiração para o nome da banda que é hoje em dia o expoente máximo do post-rock, os Mogwai. Os Mogwai são de Glasgow, Escócia. Foram formados em 1995 por Stuart Braithwaite (guitarra) e Dominic Aitchison (baixo). Fazem ainda parte da banda Martin Bulloch (bateria), John Cummings (guitarra) e Barry Burns (guitarra).

As músicas são compostas essencialmente por 3 guitarras, um baixo e bateria, onde a voz prima muitas das vezes pela ausência. Muitas são de extrema subtileza onde a melodia de uma guitarra pode passar despercebida, outras podem parecer apenas uma “confusão” de guitarras, mas em Mogwai, lá bem no fundo, há algo mais para ser extraído: uma distorção, um efeito…

Este ano voltaram ao estúdio e gravaram o sexto álbum de originais, “The Hawk is Howling”. Deixo para ouvir “I'm jim morrison i'm dead”.

“Never miss a beat” - Kaiser Chiefs

Foi já publicado o primeiro videoclip do novo álbum dos Kaiser Chiefs, “Off With Their Heads”. A música que deu origem ao videoclip chama-se “Never miss a beat”. Dia 13 de Outubro é a data de edição do novo álbum.

Peixe : Avião - 40.02

Em Portugal também se faz boa música indie. A prova disso é o álbum de estreia dos bracarenses Peixe : Avião. O álbum chama-se “40.02” e chega às lojas dia 15 de Setembro.

No “MySpace” da banda podem ser ouvidos alguns temas que fazem parte do álbum, como “A espera é um arame” e “Camaleão”, transmitindo já uma ideia do que poderá vir a ser o resto da obra. As influências de Radiohead são bem perceptíveis ao ouvido, fazendo lembrar o tão aclamado “Ok Computer!”.

Os Peixe : Avião são formados por Ronaldo Fonseca (voz), André Covas (guitarra), Luís Fernandes (guitarra), Zé Figueiredo (baixo) e Pedro Oliveira (bateria).

Gregor Samsa - Rest

Gregor Samsa é uma banda norte-americana, formada na Virgínia no ano 2000 pelo vocalista e guitarrista Champ Bennet. Para além da voz de Champ Bennet as canções contam também com a doce voz de Nikki King. Fazem ainda parte da banda Jeremiah Klinger (guitarra), Cory Bise (baixo), Billy Bennet (bateria), Mia Matsumiya (violino) e Toby Driver (clarinete). Como se não bastasse por vezes há ainda a contribuição de outros músicos, quase transformando a banda numa orquestra com uma grande diversidade de instrumentos, à semelhança do que acontece com os Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Como curiosidade, o nome Gregor Samsa teve origem na personagem que se transforma em insecto no livro “A Metamorfose” de Franz Kafka.

As suas músicas, algo lentas, fazem lembrar bandas como Slowdive e Low, devido às duas vozes em conjunto de Champ e Nikki.

“Rest”, editado em Maio de este ano, é um álbum semelhante ao que já vínhamos habituados a ouvir de Gregor Samsa…Calmo, etéreo, progressivo e atmosférico. “Jeroen van aken” é sinónimo disso mesmo.

The Mary Onettes - The Mary Onettes

The Mary Onettes é uma banda de indie-rock proveniente de Jönköping, Suécia. Formada no ano 2000 por Philip Ekström (vocais e guitarra), Petter Agurén (guitarra), Henrik Ekström (baixo) e Simon Fransson (bateria), a banda teve um percurso atribulado devido a contratos com editoras até que conseguisse editar o seu primeiro álbum. Foi então que em 2006 a editora sueca “Labrador” lhes reconheceu o devido valor, e em 2007 puderam finalmente editar o seu primeiro álbum homónimo “The Mary Onettes”.

As influências da banda são The Cure e Stone Roses, sendo o som o resultado de uma mistura de indie-rock actual com o rock produzido por aquelas bandas nos anos 80 e 90.

A banda tem marcado para Portugal dois concertos nos dias 29 de Setembro no “MusicBox” (Lisboa) e 01 de Outubro no “O Meu Mercedes” (Porto).
